DuPage Head Start / Early Head Start takes on California

Members of our DuPage Center’s Head Start and Early Head Start program had the opportunity to attend the National Head Start Association Conference in sunny Anaheim California!  This year the program sent Allison Delgado, Site Supervisor; Latoya Hankerson, Site Supervisor; Trish Melidones, Site Supervisor; Edith Luna, Teacher Assistant; and Jenny Perfors, Teacher Assistant.

NHSA’s 45th annual National Head Start Conference and Expo is the largest national event devoted to the Head Start and Early Head Start community.  This year’s event featured a keynote session from Salman Khan, founder and CEO of the Khan Academy.  Mr. Khan’s lessons have helped millions of students engage with their own learning, regardless of circumstances at birth or the availability of educational resources. In his keynote address, “Democratizing Access to World-Class Early Learning.”  He spoke about how his global nonprofit is working to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.

Needless to say, this conference left a lasting impression on the individuals who were able to attend; here are some direct quotes:

“This conference has inspired me to continue my growth as a strong leader to help develop and empower our program, staff, children, and families.” – Allison Delgado

“This conference has given me the opportunity for self reflection, team building, and the integration of new techniques while being able to renew my mind, body, and spirit.” – Jenny Perfors

“Attending the NHSA Conference has provided me the opportunity to expand my knowledge on Executive Functioning and learn new ideas to incorporate and increase both language and music opportunities in our EHS classrooms.” – Trish Melidones

“This has been an investment in my professional development and afforded me the opportunity to make connections through networking.” – Latoya Hankerson

“Thank you, Metropolitan, for the great opportunity to attend the NHSA 2018 Conference.  I consider myself a person who is in the process of learning something new or doing it in another way.  In each session I attended, I was able to expand my knowledge and think about how to apply concepts in the classroom.” – Edith Luna
