#Altgeld10: Calumet Center’s Youth Leadership Program students experience New York City

Thank you for joining us on the adventures of the Altgeld 10!

The Altgeld 10 is a group of students in our Altgeld Youth Leadership Program at Calumet Center headed on a trip to New York City! Thanks to the generosity of The Lyon Family Foundation, these students are experiencing the culture of the city with an unforgettable itinerary we’ve been sharing throughout the trip.

Here they are before leaving, pictured with the Foundation’s Executive Director, Alex Singer.

DAY FOUR

A day of New York history concluded our group’s New York City adventure! It began with a ferry ride to explore the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Did you know the robed female figure depicted in the statue represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of
freedom? After tours of these buildings, it was on to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum – this time to go inside the museum itself. A tired but happy group gathered again at LaGuardia Airport to head back home.

DAY THREE

A morning at the Natural History Museum introduced our group to the amazing worlds of the dinosaurs, outer space, and the history of the natural world – then it was on to Central Park to explore the nature of New York’s largest urban park. At Ripley Studios, a fast-paced Theatre Games and Improv Workshop had everyone laughing with exercises designed to heighten focus, quick thinking, and sensitivity to others. Dinner at Planet Hollywood was followed by a Blue Man Group show at Astor Place Theatre – everyone looked great in their clear ponchos!

And no trip to New York City would be complete without singing in the Subway!

DAY TWO

After a tour of NBC at 30 Rock and a guest appearance at On Air at NBC Studios, our group saw the NBA Headquarters through the eyes of its President of Basketball Operations – Metropolitan board member Byron Spruell. Metropolitan CEO Ric Estrada joined the group for as Byron talked with the students about the career trajectory that took him to the NBA and showed them around the building. A chef’s tour accompanied lunch at the famous Red Rooster in Harlem, then it was off on a Hip Hop walking tour of historic Harlem including a stop at the Apollo Theater.

And did we mention learning how to breakdance?
