March is National Professional Social Work Month

Metropolitan Family Services, a leading provider of programs and services that help Chicago-area low-income families, would like everyone to recognize the positive impact of social workers during National Professional Social Work Month in March. This year’s theme, “Social Work Matters,” highlights the difference social workers make every day, as they help those in emotional, psychological, economic or physical need.

According to the National Association of Social Workers, there are 640,000 social workers across the country who work in disciplines ranging from Family Services, Health Care and Mental Health to Veteran’s Assistance, Non-Profit Management and Poverty Reduction. For more than 100 years, their work has benefitted people of all ages, in all facets of our society.

“Social workers believe in the power of human potential,” said Colleen M. Jones, LCSW, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Metropolitan Family Services. “They are the ones on the front lines, guiding people through some of the most difficult and challenging times of their lives. They also are champions for those in need, developing and advocating for critical social programs. This year’s theme, ‘Social Work Matters’ is a vital message to get out, as many social work initiatives are at risk in today’s economic climate.”

Metropolitan is one of Chicago’s first and largest human services agencies, serving almost 43,000 individuals and families throughout Chicagoland each year. For 154 years, it has been tending to the needs of the area’s low-income families – providing programming for babies to seniors and every age in between – with the goal of helping them thrive and strengthen their communities.
