Metropolitan Family Services

Respite Services

Respite for family caregivers

Family caregiving can be a full-time job that is both physically and emotionally draining. Finding appropriate resources that allow family caregivers to take a break is essential to a healthy relationship between everyone involved.

The immediate goal of respite is for professional respite care workers to assume family caregiving duties for a brief period of time, in order to allow the family caregiver a break from the stresses of family caregiving. Respite services provide a temporary therapeutic separation between the family caregiver and person that is being cared for.

Respite Care Services Program

Metropolitan Family Services offers two types of respite service to help family caregivers get this necessary relief.

The Respite Care Services Program for children with mental illnesses

The Respite Care Services Program for children with mental illnesses consists of short-term temporary care for children and youth up to age 18, their families and/or family caregivers. It is a family-driven service, individualized to the child and family through a treatment planning process, which includes parent/caregiver, child and professionals involved with the family. The services are designed to increase the functioning and inclusion of the child or youth, and to support the family. Respite can help build family cohesion, reduce the child's anxiety, and/or depression, decrease problematic behavior as well as help develop the child's strengths and skills.

Senior Respite Services

Metropolitan's Senior Respite Services provide a necessary relief to family caregivers who may be caring for an aging parent, relative or spouse.

The Knuepfer House in Elmhurst offers overnight care for seniors in a cheerful, secure, home-like setting. The Guest House Services provide Bed and Breakfast-like accommodations that allow guests to enjoy a comfortable level of independence along with some specialized attention whether for a business trip, a vacation, a long weekend, a family crisis or just some personal time away. Many of the senior guests think of the houses as a "home away from home" and enjoy repeat visits. Guests can stay up to 30 nights. Discounted rates are available.

In-home senior respite services provide companionship for older adult family members living in DuPage County. A trustworthy, trained volunteer will visit with an older family member at no cost while the family caregiver takes some worry-free time away.

Metropolitan Family Services' Respite Services provide vital support for the entire family. They stabilize and keep a family together during times of crisis.
