Successful Parenting

“I was invited by my son to participate in a father-son basketball game at Marquette School,” says “Steve.” “My son was very excited about participating and being a single father, I figured this was an opportunity to do something positive with my son. Who would have known by attending this one activity with my son that this would have been such a life-changing decision.”

At the game, Steve met Lori Rios, the Metropolitan staff member who organized the event. She told him about after-school programs available for parents as well as kids. Lucas shared his life-long dream of becoming a state correctional officer, and his disappointment at not passing the officer’s test.

Metropolitan suggested that Steve enroll in its GED program to help target areas for improvement. Metropolitan, the GED instructor and Steve worked out a tutoring schedule aside from the GED classes.

Steve adds, “At that time I was a factory worker just making it. Now thanks to the programs sponsored by Metropolitan Family Services I am proud to say I am a state correctional officer! I’m no longer afraid of school and have taken additional criminal justice classes at Daley College. Presently I am up for promotion to the rank of lieutenant!

"I owe my success and thanks to God for his continuous guidance, to Ms. Lori Rios, the Marquette School for being able to offer this program, and Metropolitan Family Services for thinking beyond the school hours. It truly does take a village.”
