Metropolitan Family Services has been matching caring adult mentors with DuPage area youth for more than 30 years. These professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships offer positive adult role models to elementary and middle school children, who can benefit from extra support in their lives. Our goal is to improve each child's self-esteem, social competence, academic achievement, and positive life choices. In addition we believe that through a combination of time, volunteering, and generosity of spirit, a mentor can give and gain life-long benefits from the partnership.
MetroMentors is always seeking volunteers in preparation for the next school year. We have a special need for male mentors as well as volunteers who are able to donate their time during the school day.
DuPage businesses, corporations, churches and service clubs are invited to partner with us in providing mentors to a school in your area. Your group may be interested in expanding your current involvement at a school or you might feel this is a good time to reach out to a school in your community. MetroMentors will work with your group and the school to tailor a program that works for everyone. Orientations, interviews, training can all be done at your site and at a time that fits your schedule. Think of what just one hour a week can do for a child!
Current Opportunities
Our school based program matches children in grades 1 - 8 with adult volunteer mentors who meet with the child at their school during the day. This partnership with area schools targets students who are at risk academically, socially or emotionally. These mentors will meet with their student one hour each week. Their activities might include: eating lunch together, school assignments, playing games, reading and talking. There is a one school year minimum commitment. Our current school locations are: Ann M Jeans Elementary in Willowbrook meets every Monday during lunch El Sierra Elementary in Downers Grove meets every Monday during lunch
Burr Ridge Middle in Burr Ridge meets every Tuesday during lunch Jefferson Middle in Villa Park meets every Tuesday after school
Washington Elementary in Wheaton meets every Wednesday during lunch Franklin Middle in Wheaton meets every Wednesday during lunch
Monroe Middle in Wheaton meets every Wednesday after school Edgewood Elementary in Woodridge meets every Thursday during lunch Pleasant Hill Elementary in Winfield meets every Thursday during lunch Blackhawk Middle in Bensenville meets every Thursday after school Schafer Elementary in Lombard meets every Friday during lunch Advisory Council
Individuals are needed to work behind the scene providing guidance to the program. The emphasis is on fundraising, marketing and partnership development. The general commitment is approximately two to three hours per month, with monthly Advisory Council meetings during the year.
